TC4 is a widely used α+β titanium alloy. Reliable microstructural characterization begins with controlled sample preparation.
In the polished condition, metallographic examination can reveal pores, inclusions, cracks, and other defects. After etching, the α and β phases can be differentiated more clearly for microstructural evaluation.
Preparation route:
Grinding: MET-F P400 → P800 → P1200 → P2500
Rough Polishing: YS + 3 μm PD-WT
Fine Polishing: SC + 1 μm PD-WT
Vibratory Polishing: ZN + 50 nm SO-A439
For EBSD analysis, the final vibratory polishing step is particularly important. It helps reduce the deformation layer remaining from mechanical preparation, improving the surface condition for clear diffraction patterns and reliable indexing.
From metallographic examination to EBSD characterization, good results start with a well-prepared surface.
